Karen Johnpillai, one of the Good Shepherd Convent students who participated in the Umbraco Education Program gives a personal recollection of her experience on the day.
On January 4th, an engaging Umbraco course organized by Luminary took place, bringing together students from two prestigious institutions: Good Shepherd Convent and St. Benedict's College. With 11 students (and two teachers) from each school participating, the event aimed to equip young minds with practical knowledge in web development. The course lasted an extensive 11 hours, making it an intensive yet rewarding experience for all involved.
The course was held at the ICT lab of St. Benedict's College, which provided an excellent environment for learning.
The setting ensured a comfortable atmosphere for us participants, supporting both our learning and engagement with the content.
The Umbraco training was thoroughly structured to maximize participant engagement and learning outcomes. The day was divided into several segments that included both instructional sessions and practical exercises.
These practical sessions were particularly beneficial, as they allowed us to apply what we learned immediately, reinforcing our understanding of key concepts related to the popular open-source content management system (CMS)
Our two instructors Mr. Emmanuel Tissera and Mr. Adi Selva made a joint effort to cater to various learning styles throughout the day. The hands-on activities and theoretical discussions benefited our learning. Interactive presentations were utilised to ensure that all participants could grasp the functionalities of Umbraco effectively.
During the breaks, we were treated to a wide spread of food, promoting a social atmosphere among peers. This allowed students from our two schools to interact, share ideas, and cultivate a community of web developers.
At the end of the course, participants completed an online exam designed to assess their understanding and mastery of the material covered.
To celebrate our achievements, a certification ceremony was held, with each student awarded a certificate of completion.
This recognition serves as a testament to our hard work and dedication, providing us with a tangible achievement that we can showcase in our academic and professional pursuits.
As an average ICT student in the past years my personal experience with web development was draining. However, after my enrollment in Umbraco it diverted me into thinking otherwise. The success of this course underscores the importance of practical learning in technical fields.
It has not only equipped me with valuable skills but has also ignited a passion for web development that may influence my future career choices.
It was not just a learning experience; it was a celebration of digital education and youth empowerment.
