OBU Colombo

The Old Boys' Union of St. Benedict's College is one of the oldest alumni associations in the country having established on 14th February 1904 by a group of distinguished past pupils including the first Ceylonese Chief Justice Sir Thomas De Sampayo, Sir Marcus Fernando and Advocate C M Fernando. The first President of the Union was Rev. Bro. Christian who was the Director of the school. To commemorate the inauguration of the Alumni, the past pupils made a token of presentation of a statue of St. John De Baptist De La Salle to the school which stands majestically to this day. Since its inception, the Old Boys' Union has gone from strength to strength with many of the loyal past pupils domiciled abroad responsible for forming branches in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Toronto, Vancouver, London, New York, Paris, Dubai, Qatar and California. Perhaps the only school in Sri Lanka that can boast of such a network of alumni branches the world over.

The loyal and generous support extended by the old boys globally has been a tremendous source of inspiration and example for many. The main fundraising project held annually, the "Benedictine Nite" dinner dance is considered the best organized by any Old Boys' Union in the country and more importantly brings in the much-needed funds to develop the infrastructure of the schools and provide better facilities to the present and future generations of young Benedictines.

The first general secretary of the OBU way back in 1904 was Old Ben G V De Silva. Another Benedictine Stalwart Patrick H. De Silva had the distinction of serving the association as its General Secretary for 24 years. Other who held this important position during the recent past include former teacher Mr C. Pathmanathan, Eric Motha (1982-1984 & 1989-1992), Lal Wickrematunge (1984-1986), Eraj Aberwardena (1986-1987), Shirley Tiseera (1987-1988), Denzil Perera (1988-1989), Frank Talayaratne (1992-1995), Francis D' Almedia (1995-1996), Ranjan Nadesapillai (1996-2004), Ravi Irugalbandara (2004-2007).

St. Benedict's College Old Boys' Union of Victoria Inc. is a chapter of the Old Boys Union of St. Benedict's College and coordinates with the committee in Colombo when executing projects related to the upliftment of our Alma Mater.
